SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — November 3, 2026. Democratic Assemblymember Damon Connolly is running for California’s open Senate District 2 seat against Republican Tief Gibbs. The district reaches from Marin and Sonoma into California’s North Coast, and its incumbent, Mike McGuire, is termed out.
From Marin government to statewide lawmaking
Connolly previously served on the Marin County Board of Supervisors, a school board and the San Rafael City Council. In his official Marin County candidate statement, he highlights 25 years of public service and describes work on wildfire prevention, air quality around schools, climate resilience and affordable housing. He says his legislation includes wildfire-related home insurance protections. These statements reflect his own characterization of his record.
A regional choice, not a city-only race
Senate District 2 spans Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Sonoma and Trinity counties. Decisions on fire insurance, housing and coastal resilience affect communities far beyond San Rafael. Gibbs, the opposing candidate from Novato, is running on a different approach to taxation, water projects and regulation.
Where did Connolly vote?
California58 has not independently authenticated a November 3 video or photograph of Connolly actually casting his ballot. His personal polling location and voting method are therefore unconfirmed in this report. Readers can review his own messages on his campaign website.
